Walk On Ice Product Details, Data Sheets & Product Facts

Walk On Ice is a 100% natural mineral-based traction agent designed to improve grip on icy and snowy surfaces. It works differently from ice melts by adding traction directly to the surface rather than relying on melting action. This page provides product facts, safety information, specifications, ingredients, and usage details to help you understand how Walk On Ice can be used around homes, vehicles, pets, and outdoor areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Walk On Ice made from?
Walk On Ice contains a blend of naturally occurring minerals. Our Chemical Analysis provides elemental test results for a sample identified as GAIA SCORIA.

Apply Walk On Ice to icy or snowy sidewalks, steps, walkways, driveways and decks. It can also be applied around a stationary vehicle tire when additional traction is needed on ice, snow or slush.

Visit our Where to Use page for guidance by surface and situation.

Walk On Ice is a surface-applied mineral traction agent. It adds immediate texture to targeted icy areas but does not melt or remove the ice.

Other winter traction solutions include:

  • Abrasives such as sand, gravel and dirt
  • Wearable devices such as shoe cleats and spikes
  • Vehicle equipment such as studded tires and tire chains
  • Traction mats and anti-slip coverings
  • Ice melters such as rock salt and chloride-free ice melt

Each category works differently and addresses a different type of winter problem.

Both Walk On Ice and sand add physical texture without melting ice. Sand is a general-purpose abrasive often used across larger areas. Walk On Ice is a portable mixed-mineral traction agent intended for targeted icy areas such as steps, entrances, walkways and around vehicle tires. Both may need reapplication when covered by snow or displaced by traffic.
Some clay-based kitty litter may provide temporary texture when dry. However, absorbent varieties can become wet, soft or muddy after contact with snow and slush. Walk On Ice uses durable mineral granules designed to add traction on icy and snowy surfaces. Neither product melts ice.
Alfalfa meal is an agricultural product that may add limited surface texture and help make treated areas more visible. However, it can absorb moisture, soften and leave organic residue. Walk On Ice uses a selected mixture of volcanic and mineral granules intended specifically for winter icy surface traction.
Dry dirt may create temporary grit, but its texture and effectiveness can vary. When mixed with melting snow, it may become mud and create additional cleanup. Walk On Ice provides a more consistent mineral texture without relying on ordinary soil.
Gravel can provide substantial traction, particularly on unpaved areas. However, larger stones may roll underfoot, move away from the treated area or be unsuitable for entrances and small residential paths. Walk On Ice uses smaller mineral particles suited to targeted household and vehicle applications.
Rock salt is primarily an ice melter. It gradually loosens ice by lowering the freezing point of water under suitable conditions. Walk On Ice is a traction agent. It adds immediate surface texture while leaving the underlying ice in place. Rock salt may provide temporary grit before dissolving, but traction is not its primary function.

Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are chloride-based ice melters. Their main purpose is to melt or loosen ice.

Urea and calcium magnesium acetate, commonly called CMA, are used to help loosen or melt ice under suitable conditions. They still require time to interact with the frozen surface.

Walk On Ice does not use a melting reaction. It provides physical traction immediately after application. The appropriate choice depends on whether the immediate objective is added grip or ice removal.

Safe Paw and Walk On Ice perform different but complementary functions.

  • Safe Paw is a 100% chloride-free, salt-free, pet-safe ice melt used to help melt and loosen accumulated ice.

  • Walk On Ice is a mineral traction agent used when immediate surface grip is needed.

Use Safe Paw when ice melting is the objective. Use Walk On Ice when traction is needed immediately or while an ice treatment is working.

Yes. Use Safe Paw to help melt and loosen accumulated ice. Apply Walk On Ice where immediate traction is needed during or after ice treatment.

The products should be applied separately according to their individual purposes rather than physically mixed together.

Winter boots, cleats and removable spikes add traction to the footwear of the person wearing them. They move with the user and may help when crossing several untreated areas, although cleats and spikes may need to be removed before walking on certain indoor surfaces. Walk On Ice works differently. You apply it directly to a targeted icy or snowy surface, adding mineral texture for the people and pets using that area. It can also be used alongside suitable winter footwear when additional surface traction is needed.
Studded tires, chains, cables and tire socks attach to a vehicle’s tires to provide traction while the vehicle is travelling. These options require installation and should be used according to their manufacturers’ instructions. Walk On Ice is applied to the icy or snowy ground instead of being fitted to the vehicle. Place it at and around the contact area of a stationary tire when localized ground-level traction is needed. It is designed for a specific trouble spot, not for providing continuous traction along an icy driving route.
Vehicle traction mats, rubber entrance mats, heated mats and anti-slip tapes or coatings create traction within a fixed or clearly defined area. Depending on the option, they may require careful placement, installation, surface preparation or a suitable power source. Their coverage is also limited to the surface beneath them. Walk On Ice is a portable traction agent that you apply directly to the current trouble spot. It can be distributed around a stationary tire or across icy steps, paths and landings without electricity or permanent installation. Reapply it when the mineral particles become covered or displaced as conditions change. Walk On Ice adds mineral texture for traction; it does not melt or remove the underlying ice.
Broom-finished or textured concrete provides more surface variation than highly polished concrete. However, ice can still cover the texture and create a smooth frozen layer. Walk On Ice adds mineral contact points on top of the ice instead of relying only on the texture underneath it.
Walk On Ice is a traction agent, not an ice melt. Ice melts are designed to loosen or remove ice, while traction agents are designed to improve grip on existing icy surfaces. Walk On Ice can be useful when immediate traction is needed on slippery areas where waiting for ice to melt is not the goal.
Walk On Ice is designed as a surface traction product for winter conditions and uses naturally occurring minerals. It can be applied in outdoor areas where people and pets need improved traction.
Walk On Ice is designed to provide traction in cold winter conditions, including temperatures down to approximately -35°C.
