Why we created Walk On Ice?
A Practical Answer to an Immediate Winter Problem
When a walkway, step, entrance or vehicle-tire area becomes icy and slippery, the first need is often traction. Melting the ice can take time and may depend on temperature, product type and surface conditions.
Drawing on decades of winter-product development led by our founder and president, Steven J. Greenwald, we developed a mineral-based approach for situations where grip is needed right away. Walk On Ice puts that approach in a convenient 1.75 lb canister that can be kept near an entrance or carried in a vehicle.

What is Safe Paw?
Safe Paw is our patented, chloride-free ice melt developed for household winter use, including homes with pets. Its job is to melt and loosen accumulated ice.

Safe Thaw is our industrial-strength ice melt for commercial, industrial and demanding winter applications. It is intended for customers managing larger properties or specialized operating environments.
What is Ice Traction?
Ice Traction is our industrial-strength traction product. It is designed to add immediate grip across larger commercial areas where melting the ice is not the immediate objective.

Walk On Ice is our portable natural-mineral traction product. It comes in a 1.75 lb canister and is designed to provide immediate, localized grip on icy and snowy outdoor surfaces.
Is Walk On Ice a separate company?

Choosing the Right Gaia Product
What is the difference between an ice melter and a traction product?
An ice melter is intended to melt or loosen accumulated ice. A traction product is applied on top of an icy or snowy surface to add grip. Safe Paw and Safe Thaw are ice melters; Walk On Ice and Ice Traction are traction products.
Which Gaia product is intended for household ice melting?
Safe Paw is our household chloride-free ice melt. It is the most relevant starting point when the goal is to melt and loosen accumulated ice around a home, particularly where pets are part of the household.
Which products are intended for businesses and facilities?
Safe Thaw is our commercial and industrial ice-melting option. Ice Traction is our commercial and industrial traction option. The right choice depends on whether the immediate goal is melting ice or creating surface grip.
Can an ice melter and a traction product be used as part of the same winter plan?
Yes. They perform different jobs. An ice melter can be used when the goal is to melt or loosen accumulated ice, while a traction product can be applied where immediate grip is needed during or after ice treatment. Always follow the directions for each product.
Does Walk On Ice melt ice?
No. Walk On Ice is a traction product. Its natural-mineral blend adds texture and grip to the surface rather than relying on a chemical melting reaction.
Where can Walk On Ice be applied?
Walk On Ice can be applied to localized icy or snowy areas such as outdoor steps, walkways, entrances, driveways and stationary vehicle-tire contact areas. Review our Where to Use guide for application examples.
What is Walk On Ice made from?
Walk On Ice uses a selected blend of naturally occurring mineral and volcanic materials. The different mineral particles help absorb surface moisture and create grip on ice and snow.
Can Walk On Ice be carried in a vehicle?
Yes. We designed the 1.75 lb canister as a portable format that can be stored at home, at work or in a vehicle. It can be applied around stationary tire-contact areas when localized traction is needed.
